Undergraduate Programs

1. Eligibility

1. Persons who does not possess Japanese citizenship.

2. Persons with legal status of residence compatible with entering a university i.e.
"College Student", "Pre-college Student ", as prescribed by Immigration-Control and Refugee-Recognition Act, and who also meet one of the following criteria:

1 Persons who have completed or will complete 12 years of school education outside of Japan by March 31, 2010.
2 Persons who have been admitted by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan that he/she has equivalent educational background to criterion 1;
2-a. Persons who have passed a government examination which certifies that he/she has equal academic ability to the completion of 12 years of school education. He/she must reach 18 years of age by March 31, 2010.
2-b. Persons who have completed high school education (or equivalent) outside of Japan, and also have completed or will complete a preparatory course for Japanese college education at the institution designated by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. He/she must reach 18 years of age by March 31, 2010.
3 Persons who have received an international baccalaureate by the Secretariat of the International Baccalaureate Foundation and who will reach 18 years of age by March 31, 2010.
4 Persons who have been awarded an Abitur and who will reach 18 years of age by March 31, 2010.
5 Persons who have been granted a baccalaureate by the French Republic and who will reach 18 years of age by March 31, 2010.

3. Applicants are required to take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).

Note 1: Please refer to the table (PDF) on the subjects that applicants must choose when taking EJU.

Note 2: In addition to the above criteria, the applicants for the Faculty of Economics and the School of Engineering must satisfy one of the followings:

1) Applicants for the Faculty of Economics are required;

  • To secure a combined total score of 280 in Japanese (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Listening and Reading Comprehension)
  • To secure a combined total score of 280 points or higher in Mathematics (Course 1 or Course 2) AND Japan and the World OR two of following science courses: Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.

2) Applicants for the Department of Mechanical Engineering are required;

  • To secure a combined total score of 230 in Japanese (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Listening and Reading Comprehension)
  • To secure a combined total score of 230 in Science (Physics AND either Chemistry or Biology) AND Mathematics (Course 2).

3) Applicants for the Department of Electrical and Electronic Systems or the Department of Information and Computer Science are required;

  • To secure a combined total score of 280 in Japanese (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Listening and Reading comprehension)
  • To secure a combined total score of 140 in Science (Physics AND either Chemistry or Biology)
  • To secure a score of 140 in Mathematics (Course 2).

4) Applicants for the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Functional Materials Science, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Environmental Science are required;

  • To secure a combined total score of 240 in Japanese (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Listening and Reading Comprehension sections)
  • To secure total score of 120 points in two Science subjects, designated by the department you wish to apply.
  • To secure a score of 120 in Mathematics (Course 2).

Note 3: Applicants must bring the original copies of voucher and score report of EJU on the entrance examination day.

Note 4: Persons who do not possess Japanese citizenship but have graduated or will graduate from a Japanese high school (including the latter stage of secondary education) by March 2010, are required to take the general entrance examination as regular admission for Japanese applicants.

2. Entrance Examination

Applicants are exempted from taking the National Center Test for the University Entrance Examination. Admission decisions are based on a combination of factors, including the results of the Academic Achievement Test, essay, interview administered by Saitama University, records from the EJU and academic record from the applicant's school.

b. From overseas
Applicants are required to send an A-4 size, self-addressed envelope to the applying school of Saitama University. Enclose a memo that clearly states the desired faculty (or major) in Japanese or English and International Reply Coupons (IRC) as shown below.
On the front of the envelope, please write "Request for Application Form for Foreign Students" and send it to the relevant faculty or school.
